Activity 4.1 – US Environmental History and Major Regulations

Image
The history of environmental thought in the United States is a rich tapestry woven with various movements, ideologies, and influential figures that have shaped the nation's relationship with the environment. From early Native American beliefs of harmony to modern-day debates on climate change and sustainability, the evolution of environmental thinking in the US reflects changing attitudes, policies, and scientific discoveries. Before European colonization, indigenous tribes across the continent held profound connections with nature. Their beliefs emphasized the interdependence between humans and the natural world, viewing nature as sacred and deserving of respect. Practices such as sustainable land management and spiritual rituals underscored their harmonious coexistence with the environment. However, with the arrival of European settlers, a different approach to nature emerge d . The Europeans did not have this same respect for nature. They abused the land and wo...

Activity 3.3.3.1 Current Events in Plastic Pollution

Six-Point Critical Analysis of Current Event   1. Exploratory   Microplastics are present in your home in ways you wouldn’t always expect. You consume them in food, breathe them in, and pollute the world by using products that contain them. Simply by doing the laundry you produce millions of plastic microfibers. There is so much damage done to our planet by doing everyday tasks that most do not even realize. There are many simple, quick, and easy things you can do to reduce the amount of mi croplastic you produce. In activity 3.3.3, we looked at all the plastics one person uses in a day. Many of these plastics get discarded into the trash or washed down the drain. This highly contributes to the microplastic pollution influx we have today.   2. Diagnostic   Increasingly in our advancing world today, plastic is used in al most every product. From clothes, packaging, shoes, soaps, and cars. All plastic products have the potential to be turned into micro plastics. W...

Activity 3.3.3 – My Plastic Use

Microplastics, a term that has garnered increasing attention in recent years, refers to tiny plastic particles smaller than 5 millimeters . (Haab & Haab, n.d.) They come in two main categories: primary and secondary microplastics. Primary microplastics are intentionally manufactured small plastic particles used in various consumer products, such as microbeads in personal care items and abrasive blasting media. They are introduced into the environment through product use and improper disposal. Secondary microplastics, on the other hand, are created when larger plastic items break down into smaller fragments due to environmental factors like sunlight, mechanical stress, or microbial degradation. (Rogers 2023).      The distribution of microplastics is wide-ranging and has been observed in various ecosystems, even in seemingly pristine locations. Microplastics take on different forms, including microbeads, microfibers, and micro fragments , and h...
